THE ALPS OF THE EAST FIORDS
Oddsskarð (Odd's Pass) - or "the Alps of the East Fiords" as it is often called is on the road the runs between Eskifjörður and Neskaupstaður and is one of the best ski areas in Iceland. The ski-lifts ot Oddsskarð carry skiers from an altitude of 513m to 840m, with the top station giving magnificent views over Reyðarfjörður. There is also a drag-lift for beginners, excellent terrain for snow-boarding, and a comfortable lodge which includes a cafeteria. The popular Easter Festival (Páskafjör) is the high point of the East Fiords skiing season with a programme of events that includes competitions for both skiers and snow-boarders, searches for easter eggs, entertainment by a Tyrolian orchestra, and a fireworks display.
The Oddsskarð skifield, on which the main slopes are all floodlit, is also used as a training and competition venue for winter sports clubs in the Fjarðabyggð district: Austri in Eskifjörður, Valur in Reyðarfjörður, and Þróttur in Neskaupstaður.
